The Role
We are hiring a Commercial Director to lead Briter’s business development, product subscriptions, and partnership agenda.
This is a senior outward-facing role focused on revenue generation, partnerships, and market positioning. You will own the commercial pipeline end-to-end: identifying opportunities, converting leads, shaping offerings, and ensuring long-term client value.
You will work closely with the Founder and Leadership team, but will be expected to be able to operate independently, representing Briter with senior stakeholders across private, public, and development sectors. Success (including in sales) requires credibility with institutional decision-makers, strong strategic judgement, and the ability to translate complex capabilities into clear commercial propositions, so subject matter expertise, contextual knowledge, and technical understanding of Briter's work and market are critical.
Key responsibilities
Revenue growth and pipeline development
- Own and drive Briter’s commercial pipeline across research, data products, and advisory.
- Convert existing networks, inbound demand, and warm leads into high-value engagements.
- Identify new revenue streams, sectors, and geographies for expansion.
- Develop account strategies for priority clients and partners.
- Support pricing strategy and commercial structuring of engagements.
Client acquisition, product sales, and relationship management
- Lead senior-level business development conversations with investors, corporates, DFIs, foundations, and governments.
- Lead product-led sales across target audiences.
- Build long-term strategic relationships rather than transactional deals.
- Represent Briter in meetings, events, and delegations globally.
- Negotiate contracts and close complex multi-stakeholder engagements.
- Ensure strong client satisfaction and repeat business.
Partnerships and market expansion
- Develop partnerships that unlock distribution, credibility, or new business.
- Identify collaboration opportunities with ecosystem organisations, consulting firms, and platforms.
- Support entry into priority regions and sectors.
- Structure joint offerings with partners where relevant, such as proposals and partnerships.
Commercial strategy and positioning
- Translate Briter’s capabilities into clear commercial narratives, supporting with decks, presentations, and external conversations.
- Work with Marketing & Comms to refine messaging for target audiences.
- Inform Product and Research teams about priorities based on new demand.
- Be aware of and provide intelligence on competitors, pricing, and emerging opportunities.
Internal coordination
- Work closely with delivery teams to ensure proposals are submitted on time and with high quality.
- Support prioritisation of opportunities based on financial impact, risk, and probability.
- Help establish scalable commercial processes and reporting, working with Product, Data, Marketing, and Client Delivery teams.
- Contribute to revenue forecasting and planning by working closely with the Managing Director and relevant teams.
What we are looking for
Core
- Significant experience in business development, partnerships, or commercial leadership (7-10+ years)
- Strong credibility with senior stakeholders (C-suite, government officials, institutional investors) across Briter's key business and customer segments.
- Proven ability to close complex, high-value deals, including designing underlying processes and concept notes.
- Experience working across emerging markets, especially Africa.
- Background in consulting, investment, corporate strategy, B2B scale-ups, or international development
- Excellent communication and negotiation skills
- Ability to operate independently in a fast-moving environment, especially in a remote-first company active across four continents.
- Ability to bring relevant portfolios and network.
