Carrefour is a French multinational retail and wholesaling corporation and one of the largest hypermarket chains in the world. Founded in 1959 by Marcel Fournier, Denis Defforey, and Jacques Defforey, the company is widely recognized as a pioneer of the "hypermarket" retail concept (combining a supermarket and a department store under one roof). Today, Carrefour operates a massive, multi-format network encompassing hypermarkets, supermarkets, convenience stores, and cash-and-carry outlets. The corporation is currently executing a sweeping digital transformation and "food transition" strategy, aimed at democratizing access to high-quality, organic, and sustainable food. While directly operating thousands of stores across its core markets in Europe and Latin America, Carrefour also leverages powerful master franchise agreements, such as its partnership with Dubai-based Majid Al Futtaim (MAF), to scale its brand across the Middle East, Africa (including major footprints in Kenya and Uganda), and Asia.
