2025 ABAN Angel Investment Survey Report
The 2025 Angel Investment Survey Report provides a data-driven snapshot of how early-stage capital is shaping Africa’s innovation ecosystems today.
Built on survey insights, transaction data, and engagements with active investors across the continent, the report examines how angel investors and networks are responding to a shifting funding environment. As global capital becomes more constrained, early-stage financing is increasingly being driven by local and diaspora investors stepping in to back the next generation of founders.
The findings point to a maturing but uneven landscape. Angel networks now operate across 37 countries, with more than 5,000 investors participating in early-stage deals. At the same time, capital remains concentrated in a handful of markets, and access to first-cheque funding continues to define which ventures are able to move forward.
Beyond capital, the report highlights the role angels play in building companies and ecosystems. From shaping governance and strategy to unlocking networks and follow-on funding, angel investors remain a critical layer in the startup lifecycle, particularly in markets where institutional capital is limited.
This edition also explores how the ecosystem is evolving structurally. New vehicles, syndication models, and blended finance approaches are expanding how capital is mobilised and deployed. Diaspora participation continues to grow, while initiatives such as matching funds and investment vehicles are helping reduce friction and scale participation.
Alongside key data points and trends, the report surfaces the constraints still shaping the space, from limited exit pathways to fragmented deal flow, and outlines where coordination, capital, and ecosystem design will be needed to unlock the next phase of growth.
