Ecosystem assessment of food, land, and water actors in the humanitarian, development, and peace nexus

With 1.5 billion people facing increased risk of food insecurity in these regions, this market assessment—which covers 14 priority countries in Africa, the Middle East, and South Asia—is essential for understanding how to build long-term resilience and a bridge between humanitarian response and sustainable development.

This report, done by Briter in collaboration with CGIAR and the International Water Management Institute (IWMI), is a market assessment and data-driven benchmark of the private enterprises and innovators operating in Fragility and Conflict-Affected Settings (FCAS). The main goal is to understand how to leverage science-driven innovation and the private sector to improve the resilience of food, land, and water systems in these highly vulnerable areas.

The assessment tracked 674 innovators who have collectively raised over $326 million in funding. Key findings include:

  • Innovation is heavily concentrated in food production.
  • Critical but under-addressed areas like water resources, migration, and anticipatory action make up only 20% of the ecosystem.
  • The support ecosystem is highly international, with 90% of the funding coming from actors outside the FCAS countries.
