Scaling Agtech Innovation Bundles Across African Markets

In collaboration with the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) under CGIAR's Scaling for Impact (S4I) Program, our new report, ‘Scaling Agtech Innovation Bundles Across African Markets,’ maps how digitally-enabled agtech ventures are evolving across five priority markets: Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Nigeria, and Zambia, and three interrelated challenge areas: water access, soil health, and circular nutrient management.

Drawing on data from 160+ companies (104 with disclosed funding, totalling $372 million across 188 deals), six in-depth case studies, and key informant interviews with founders, investors, and ecosystem enablers, the report applies an adapted version of the Adaptive Scaling Ecosystem (ASEco) framework to assess where each market sits across the Niche, Reach, Accelerate, and Transform scaling functions, and what financing instruments, ecosystem stakeholders, and enabling conditions are required to move innovation bundles forward.

The report is intended as a decision-support tool for funders, policymakers, development partners, and innovators working to advance inclusive, market-driven scaling of agrifood solutions across Africa.
