Policy landscape for climate tech venture ecosystem activation in Sub-Saharan Africa

This policy report explores the four priority areas of public policies to enable an innovation-friendly environment for climate tech solutions in Sub-Saharan Africa: investing in R&D facilities and universities, establishing patent and intellectual property protection, designing centralised climate data and intelligence platforms, and developing climate tech innovation hubs. While many of these frameworks are still in the early stages, there are promising leads in the ecosystem - South Africa leading on academic research capacity and IP protection laws and Nigeria's ongoing efforts to centralise climate data. This report also draws on what was learned from the recent Senegalese Forum on Climate Tech to demonstrate how a systemic approach to the ecosystem can help develop stronger coordination across actors. This report is part of the CATAL1.5°T Initiative, a global effort to promote local climate tech innovation in emerging markets. The German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the Green Climate Fund (GCF), the initiative is implemented by GIZ together with EIT Climate-KIC and regional partners. It supports early-stage entrepreneurs and ventures working on climate solutions in West Africa and Latin America.
