UK-Japan-Collaboration-for-innovation-in-Africa-English
At the start of the decade, when global markets slowed and many short-term or first-time overseas investors pulled back from Africa, Japanese investors stepped up to carve out a greater role in the continent’s innovation landscape. Since then, they have channelled capital into African companies, through both direct investments and strategic partnerships across sectors such as fintech, health, mobility, and beyond.
Today, Japanese funders continue to expand this role, working alongside the UK as strategic partners committed to tackling global challenges, advancing the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and accelerating Africa’s economic growth.
This report presents one of the first comprehensive mappings of Japanese venture and strategic capital in Africa. Drawing on more than $1.8 billion in disclosed deals and the activity of over 60 funders, it highlights the momentum of Asia–Africa investment corridors, the rise of UK–Japan co-investment, and the growing appetite among African founders for patient, strategic capital rooted in local realities.
